A dog named Roosevelt was rescued as a stray by Chicago Animal Control officers. Roosevelt had muddy paws and dirty fur which are quite common for a stray dog.
Roosevelt was also skittish around humans, which was also common among stray dogs. Animal Control officers and animal shelter staff assumed that Roosevelt was living on his own as a stray dog for quite some time.
However, animal rescuers decided to find out more about Roosevelt and they discovered that Roosevelt wasn’t a stray dog. Roosevelt used to be a part of a family until he was abandoned by his previous owner. The animal rescuers don’t have any idea how a kind and beautiful dog like Roosevelt survived but they still gave him a second chance to find a loving forever home.
Kelly Michael and Sarah Lauch felt sorry for Roosevelt when they first saw him and read about his story. Kelly and Sara couldn’t believe that someone would abandon such a beautiful dog. However, they soon discovered the reason why Roosevelt’s owner abandoned him. It turns out that Roosevelt had no control of his bladder, which meant that he had problems urinating.
Also, because Roosevelt is a pit bull, there was little chance that someone would want to adopt him. Thankfully, Kelly and Sarah knew better and both of them connected with Roosevelt when they first met him. Roosevelt was finally getting a second chance to be a part of a family that will never abandon him again.
When Kelly and Sarah first let Roosevelt out of his cage, his personality instantly changed. Roosevelt felt safe and he immediately showed Kelly and Sarah how thankful he is by giving his new parents cuddles and puppy kisses. Kelly and Sarah assumed that everything would go smoothly with Roosevelt. However, over the next few days, Kelly and Sarah noticed that Roosevelt’s toileting problems weren’t going away.
The couple decided to take Roosevelt to the vet for a checkup to shed a light on what’s causing Roosevelt’s toileting problems. After the checkup, it was discovered that Roosevelt had late-stage bone cancer. Kelly and Sarah were devastated especially when the vet told them that Roosevelt had only three more months to live.
However, Kelly and Sarah decided to let Roosevelt experience everything that dogs love, such as swimming in a lake, eating ice cream, and even getting massages. Roosevelt’s story went viral online and people started sending treats and toys for Roosevelt until his final days.
Eventually, Roosevelt succumbed to his illness. When Kelly and Sarah saw that Roosevelt was no longer able to live a full life and was in constant pain, they made the painful decision to say goodbye. However, Roosevelt made a lasting impact on everyone who followed his story and he also inspired a lot of people.
