When Zavod Pit, a small non-profit animal rescue group in Ljubljana, Slovenia, received a notification about a pregnant stray dog that gave birth inside a parking lot, rescuers wasted no time. Lead by its founder, Tanja Vidergar, they rushed to the rescue location. When they arrived, they realized the mama dog had already given birth to five puppies.
The rescuers examined the puppies to make sure they were alive. They felt relieved when they confirmed the first four made it out into the world just fine. The fifth one, however, was stuck in the mama dog’s birth canal and died.
Tanja and her crew placed the surviving puppies in a travel crate. When they were about to carry the mama dog, they realized she was still in labor. And true enough, she still had puppies in her belly.
With utmost care, the rescuers scooped up the mama dog and loaded her into the rescue car. They took her and her puppies straight to the vet’s office for medical care. They stabilized their condition while on their way because they were too weak to make it on their own.
The vets hooked the mama dog to an IV and immediately started her on antibiotics. Later on, once she calmed down, they prepped her for an emergency C-section. She could no longer give birth on her own so they had to help her by cutting her belly open.
After a few hours, six more puppies were born. One of them, however, lasted only for a few seconds. It was disheartening to lose two puppies, but it was also a relief that nine of them survived.
The mama dog, named Mama Lena, later on, was completely exhausted. She needed time to recover but once she woke up, she attended to her babies right away. She nursed them, groomed them, and made them all feel loved.
Mama Lena and her babies stayed with Zavod Pit until all nine puppies were big and old enough to move to a foster home. They spent their happy days together, and one by one, they left and joined their new forever homes.
