A man named Carson rescued a dog one day. He brought the dog home and named him Lou. His wife, Maya, was shocked that her husband brought home a dog.
She then realized that they have been looking for one that can go on adventures with them. She was very excited to include Lou in their hikes and adventures.
The couple thought that Lou would love it. He did not. Well, not at the beginning, anyway.
He was terrified, and when he got anxious, he would make these swimming motions which calmed him down. Maya and Carson encouraged him during their hikes and cheered him on. Still, he was an anxious dog.
What helped Lou gain more confidence was another dog named Dixie. Dixie was the dog of Maya’s friend, and they would often bring her to adventures as well. When Lou saw another dog during their travels, this made him enjoy the whole experience more. Having Dixie around was a big help because Lou followed her and observed what she did.
Dixie helped Lou gain confidence and also made him trust his parents more. That was not the only thing that he learned. He also learned how to overcome his fear of water.
Maya and Carson would often laugh because Lou had webbed paws that should make him a good swimmer. Yet, Lou hated the water. That’s why Lou’s family decided to spend more time in the water and help him overcome his fear. They wanted him to enjoy himself so he wouldn’t be too afraid.
It took a while, but Lou learned to enjoy being in the water. Lou may not love it, but he is at least learned to get in the water independently. For Lou, that was already a significant achievement. Even with his anxiety, Maya and Carson felt blessed to have Lou around.
