The Humane Society of the United States received a call one day from Ohio authorities seeking assistance in rescuing 166 dogs and cats. The nonprofit organization, one of the largest animal welfare groups in the United States, quickly obliged. The officials told them they had discovered a property in Adams County, where animals live in neglect and despicable conditions.
When the rescue team arrived, they were dismayed to see that many of the dogs were sick and injured. They live among their waste and have not had any decent thing to eat. Some of them were chained and couldn’t even move. One of them was a chocolate labrador named Chuckie.
Hoarding
Chuckie was one of the first dogs that the rescuers met. He was tethered near the front of the property and got loud and excited when the humans walked by him. His chain was wrapped around a rotting deer carcass which was his only source of nutrients.
It took the whole day to gather all the hoarded animals and move them to a more comfortable facility. All the dogs were cleaned, fed, and scanned for a microchip. That is when they had the chance to call Chuckie’s owners. They were surprised to learn that the dog had been missing for more than five years.
The reunion
After a couple of weeks under the rescue group’s care, Chuckie was driven all the way from Ohio to Indiana where his family lives. They were very eager to finally get their beloved pet back after missing him all those years.
And when the dog arrived, they had a beautiful and emotional reunion. The owners rushed to meet their pet as he got out of the vehicle used to transport him. Chuckie was equally eager to greet his humans. He dragged his leash and soon broke free from the volunteer who took him home.
There were hugs and kisses everywhere. All of them were grateful for the efforts of the kind rescuers who made it all happen.
