Residents of a 15-story-building in Virginia Beach became frantic when word got out that the top floor was on fire. Firefighters were immediately called, and they rushed to the scene. When they arrived, they quickly coordinated the safe evacuation of all the people. And fortunately, none of them were hurt.
But their job was not finished yet. Someone told them that a dog was trapped inside the burning apartment, and there was no one there with him. Several firefighters rushed up to save the dog.
Smoke everywhere
Evacuating the numerous people living in the huge building was no easy task. There was a lot of confusion, and smoke was everywhere. Since the elevator can’t be used, the firefighters had to go up and down the stairs several times to make sure that the people got down safely and no one was left behind.
When they finally got everyone out, the brave responders were already exhausted. But when they heard that a dog was still trapped on the top floor, they knew that they had to find the energy to go and save him.
More than a 100 pounds
The dedicated responders climbed the 15 flights of stairs and knocked the door down of the burning apartment. Time was crucial as the fire could spread everywhere. There was already thick smoke covering the area, and the dog could get smothered by it.
What the brave men and women didn’t know was that it was a hundred-pound husky that was waiting for them. By that time, the heavy dog, named Igor, was already unconscious. He was dead weight and had to be carried all the way down. They had to fashion a makeshift gurney so that they can divide the dog’s weight between them.
And once they were outside, they placed a special oxygen mask over his face. Thankfully, he regained consciousness a few moments later.
Igor didn’t suffer any burns or injuries and became responsive soon after. Because his owners weren’t around they brought him to a clinic where he received treatment, and he remained there for observation.
Thanks to the brave firefighters, Igor is alive and back with his family again. Although the fire damaged their home, they are just relieved that their beloved pooch is ok.
