Dogs are known to be exceptional human companions. They are known to help out people in classrooms, hospitals, and even elderly homes. Now, one dog is gaining popularity for providing comfort to mourners inside funeral homes.
Lulu, a golden doodle, works as a typical therapy dog. Her owner, Matthew Fiorillo, got the idea of bringing her to funeral homes when he once witnessed a Maltese helped calm down an irate airline passenger. Matthew realized the immense effect dogs have on people in distress.
Lulu’s comforting skills were finally put to test when she became an official therapy dog for the Ballard- Dunard funeral homes in Elmsford, New York. According to Matthew, the golden doodle is a natural. The sweet pup would instantly go up to lonely family members and friends and gives them comfort.
Matthew added that Lulu has an unmistakable knack for approaching people who needed her comfort the most. Here mere presence gives the mourners assurance. The golden doodle also provides therapy to people in pain, especially those who have a hard time coping with the loss of their departed loved ones.
Lulu always sports a blue therapy vest when she and Matthew are called in by the funeral homes for service. The therapy dog’s vest says “Feel free to pet me, I am friendly.” Lulu will then walk around and find people to comfort. She will either sit next to a mourner or gently nudge their hand and encourage a reassuring pat.
According to Christian Science Monitor research, the use of therapy dogs in funeral homes is now common among funeral homes across the country. Lulu and other service dogs most certainly help ease the depression and the sadness of bereaved families and give a little hope to lives left behind.
