Dora was a stray dog roaming the streets of Romania. One day, animal control officers picked her up and sent her to the city pound. She now had a roof over her head, but her eyes were evidence of a life of loneliness.
It seems that Dora spent most of her days confined to her kennel instead of playing in the sun with other dogs.
When Howl of a Dog, an animal rescue organization based in Romania, visited the pound to save her, she was cooperative but also rather detached, as if she had already given up on a chance at a better life.
At the veterinary clinic, Dora received medical care for her skin problems. Her rescuers also put her on a healthy diet to get her weight up as she was emaciated when she came in. Physically, she had no other issues.
However, Dora’s problems ran deeper. At her foster home, she was able to walk free for the first time in a long timeābut she always kept her head down and tucked her tail between her legs, as if fearful that her freedom was only temporary.
It wasn’t until two weeks later that she gave a tentative wag of her tail. It was a small gesture, but it was a sign that the timid Dora was finally beginning to realize that she was now in a good place where someone was looking after her.
Thanks to her foster mom’s unwavering love and patience, Dora slowly but surely came out of her shell. She was still quiet, but she started playing with other dogs and exploring the outdoors in earnest, her tail happily wagging.
Eventually, Howl of a Dog found an interested adopter named Louise from the UK.
Since Dora had to wait for a bit before embarking on a 1,500-mile journey from Romania to the UK, her new fur mom sent her a big box of treats that included a touching letter and a knitted doll that looked like Louise.
Today, Dora enjoys her life in Devon with Louise and her canine friend Cole, a black Labrador. Together, the three of them enjoy the fresh air and clean waters of the countryside.
