As a dog owner, you are responsible for keeping your dog happy and healthy. You need to nurture him and provide for his needs. Let’s discuss what you can do to care for your furry friend properly.
Provide a clean shelter.
You are responsible for providing shelter that offers protection from different seasons and weather. It is also essential to give him his personal space whether he sleeps inside or outside the house.
If he sleeps inside:
- You can allow the dog to select his sleeping area. It will be anywhere under a desk, table, or bedroom. If he chooses a spot, provide him with a blanket, towel, or dog pillow. If he decides to sleep in your bedroom, ensure he sleeps on his bedding and not in your bed.
If your dog lives outside:
- Please give him a doggie house big enough to move around in. Dogs love to jump and look around, so ensure their home is sturdy. It should be made with materials to keep him safe from wind and rain and positioned where shade protects him from the sun’s heat. Line it with a blanket, then give him a towel or dog pillow.
Remember to wash his blankets and towels regularly.
Provide clean, fresh water.
Make sure that your dog is drinking enough water every day to keep him hydrated. Check his water supply twice daily to ensure enough in his bowl.
Examining his skin can help you check if your dog is getting enough hydration. Gently lift the skin over the dog’s back, then let go. The dog is dehydrated if it moves back into place slowly.
Establish suitable body weight.
Just like humans, being overweight is not healthy for your dog as it leads to heart disease, skeletal problems, and diabetes. A dog can become overweight if fed too much but gets too little exercise.
If you want to keep him on a diet, you can lower his food intake by 10% for about two weeks. Repeat this until your dog is at an ideal weight.
Exercise your dog regularly.
Exercise is essential for dogs because it prevents them from getting bored. A bored dog can develop behavior problems like unusual barking, chewing, and digging that may annoy you. You need to take your dog for a walk or run with you to help your dog relax.
Play with him
Dogs were never meant to be alone as they are naturally playful. Make sure to keep your dog happy and secure by spending time with him and playing together.
You can play tug-of-war or fetch or throw him a Frisbee. Even running with your dog or walking him outside the house can be fun for him.
Regular vet visit
Knowing that you must have selected a trusted veterinarian before you bring home a dog. Your vet’s suggested vaccination routine must be strictly followed to prevent your dog from getting sick. Dental hygiene and an overall checkup are also crucial for your dog’s health, so you must ensure he receives an annual visit to his vet.
