Halloween costumes are often worn only once. However, for a rescue dog, Myko, dressing up has certainly become a constant activity. Putting on his old Halloween outfit has helped him deal with the fears that he had since he’s a little puppy – and he looks cute doing it.
From the moment Elena and her husband noticed Myko online, they knew that he was special.
His mom, Elena, who requested not to mention her last name, said that Myko had been rescued from a very high-kill animal shelter in South Carolina. Prior to being at the said shelter, there had been a certain kind of neglect. When the couple noticed photos of Myko, they fall head over heels in love with him. His small face on the mobile screen with his enormous brown eyes spoke to them, and they knew that they had to rescue him.
Myko has a big personality and generally is a happy boy. However, he is very sensitive as well. Fireworks, ceiling fans, water, thunder, and deer in their backyard all make him go crazy.
Elena said that they don’t know what they might run into which sets off such a fear response. In spite of that, Myko is incredibly smart, brave, and responsive to training – he has achieved a lot and moved beyond several of these challenges.
When the anxious dog gets scared, he could bark for a long duration. Nothing seemed to relax him. So, his mom and dad needed to get innovative and found out that the solution to that problem had been just sitting in the closet the whole time.

According to Elena, they’d read regarding how clothing that is pretty much form-fitting, such as a ThunderShirt, or pressure all around their ears could be relaxing for dogs that are in a high level of arousal. She and her husband had bought an Eeyore Halloween outfit for Myko several months ago, so they chose the one with the droopy ears part of it. They clothed him with those, and right away he became so calm and quiet.
Myko’s old Eeyore outfit has since turned out to be his “quiet ears.” He exactly knows just what he has to do when those ears come out. Seeing those ears reminds Myko that it is time to calm. He does not mind wearing them – especially since he also often gets some tasty treats.
Elena said that if Myko gets reminded that he’ll need to wear the drooping ears, he may turn out to be quiet and then leave to do something else. When they take them out or their dog notices them, he also may become silent.
The quiet ears bring the anxious dog comfort. In turn, he also gives comfort to his mom and dad every day.
According to Elena, the way Myko expresses himself, his reactions to things, and his feelings is inspiring and a great reminder that it is alright to feel things and seek help when you truly need it. Some lessons that she and her husband learned from their thoughtful dog about kindness, courage, and second chances are endless.
