We treat dogs as if they really are our own children. Many of us view our dogs as best friends and loyal companions who will do anything to keep us safe. Even the mere thought of eating dog meat is disgusting and even immoral for many of us.
Some Asian countries, however, have a tradition of consuming dog meat. There are still a number of dog meat farms in Asia because of the high demand for dog meat there. Many of these dog meat farms have the most appalling living condition for dogs.
Fortunately, new legislation outlawing the operation of dog meat farms has been passed in a number of Asian countries. Some countries are making the sale of dog meat a criminal offense. Many animal rescue organizations in Asia are also working hard to rescue dogs in dog meat farms.
Humane Society International is one of these organizations. In South Korea, the group is very active and works against the brutal treatment of dogs in dog meat farms. One of their most successful rescues is when they saved more than 70 canines from a dog meat farm.
The canines were kept in filthy, overcrowded cages that were strewn with rotting food and excrement. An enormous operation involving collaboration with other animal rescue organizations in various parts of the world was required in order to save the 70 dogs from the dog meat farm.
After rescuing more than 70 dogs from the dog meat farm, the Human Society International NGO was able to find families in the US, Canada, and the UK to adopt them. Many of the dogs were scared of people. However, after they experienced love and care for the first time, they melted into their rescuer’s arms.
The tireless staff and volunteers of the Humane Society International and other animal rescue organizations saved the lives of these dogs who would otherwise have been slaughtered for their meat. They also started awareness programs all over Asia that helped start changing people’s minds about dogs.
