Taking care of your puppy does not always mean about their food or their fur. It also means that you must take care of their nails. It would help if you remembered your puppy’s toenails. If they are left untrimmed, they can make things uncomfortable for you and your family.
You must also be careful when trimming your puppy’s toenails. It would help if you asked your veterinarian because your veterinarian can give you a good idea of when and how to cut them. Let your veterinarian or groomer do the job.
But if you decide to do it independently, here are some tips to get you started. The first tip is that puppies can skittish around new objects and experiences. To lower your dog’s fear or excitability, you can introduce him to the process when you bring him home. And that also means massaging and playing with his feet and showing him the trimmers. The second tip is to ask your veterinarian or groomer to demonstrate the process and recommend a suitable pair of clippers. The last tip is there is always a chance that you accidentally cut your puppy’s nails a little too short. Just be prepared by having some styptic powder on hand.
TRIMMING HIS NAILS
Gently hold and squeeze your dog’s paw to help extend the nail. If your puppy has those clear nails, you must find the “quick” by looking for the pink line from the nail’s base. The quick is a vein in the nail that feeds the nail bed. You must not; you must never cut this!
Detecting where the quick begins on darker nails can be more difficult. If your dog has darker nails, get the appropriate instructions from your veterinarian before clipping. Wait until your puppy is still or not moving much before you cut. Start by trimming conservatively; it’s better to cut a bit at a time than to cut too much and hit the quick. If you accidentally cut your dog’s nail and it starts to bleed, apply some styptic powder to the end of the nail. Then, gently apply pressure to stop the bleeding. Your puppy might not be used to being held still like this, so be patient and praise them for staying calm.
KEEP THEM SHORT NATURALLY
Regular exercise is an excellent way to help keep your puppy’s nails shorter. You can go on walks on sidewalks whenever he’s ready to keep them shorter as his paws brush against the concrete. Keep in mind that this will not necessarily keep them 100% trimmed, but it might allow you to go longer between cuts. And always make sure to ask your veterinarian or groomer if you have any questions.
